Bacterial Brown Spot on Maxillaria tenuifolia??

Hi everyone,

I just picked up this orchid, and at the time, it seemed healthy - no visible spots as far as I knew! But after a couple days, it seems to have developed what could be Bacterial Brown Spot.

Some of these spots appear to be mechanical, caused by scraping or bumping, and have tan dry-tissue edges. But others are just brown, which worries me. What do you think?





I have isolated the plant as much as possible, and I have yet to repot. Any help would be much appreciated!

Are the spots soft? if they are or even if you are worried that they are some type of fungal infection I would put some cinnamon on them and don't let the area get wet also place the plant in a well ventilated area, then keep and eye on it to see if there is any changed.

As long as it's not soft...it's nothing to worry about.

This species is prone to "browning" on the pbulbs. I don't have mine anymore (I gave it away) but it was huge and several of the pbulbs would brown. It had done it since it was a tiny thing and it never bothered the plant. It was kind of unsightly but it was not harmful.

Here was my plant a year or two before I gave it away - I think you would agree that it was healthy.

Liz and Katrina, thanks so much for your input. The spots are not soft, so I guess I'll just try not to worry about it. :-) That is a gorgeous plant, by the way, Katrina.

Yes, it was very pretty and if I had unlimited space then it would probably still be living w/me.

BTW - W/the right growing conditions it's a weed. Bright, bright light and lots of water and you'll have a very happy plant.
