Tiny black "beetles"?

A few of my orchids are infested with these tiny little "beetle-like" bugs. They are black and so tiny that they can be squished by the end of a toothpick. At first I thought they might be mites, but they hang around in the roots/media of all the orchids they are inhabiting. I've heard that mites are usually interested in the leaves, and I've seen none on the leaves of the plants. I've seen no damage so far. Some visible roots look fine. The bugs are a very circular shape.

Any ideas what they are? And insecticides that you'd recommend? Thanks!

I've had them a few times in the pots of a few of my moisture lovers and they won't hurt the plants (per se) HOWEVER, they do feed on decaying plant matter so it could be an indicator that it's time for a repot.

If your medium is fresh/in good shape, then you need not worry about them...they are a natural part of a healthy eco-system.

They could also be springtails, also harmless. However, both soil mites and springtails indicate decaying matter in the pots, so you may want to repot into fresh medium. My favourite is lava rock, which never decays and never acquires these bugs.

Thanks everyone! I have never heard of soil mites. I hope that's what they are (they look exactly like the picture katrina provided). Most of the orchids affected have brand new medium. There are an awful lot of them, but I will be happy to not have to kill them.
