Phalaenopsis with purple spots, disease?
Default Phalaenopsis with purple spots, disease?

Hello!
Seeking help for my Phalaenopsis. I have had it since June, and must admit I'm new to orchids.

The new leaves on my Phalaenopsis have developed small purple spots. I am not sure if this a bacterial or fungal disease, or something else. I researched online, for what this could be, looked at different pictures of diseased orchids, but not sure i have found the right answer. I am assuming it is fungal?

The leaf that grew with purple/dark spots had a weird shape. So i cut it and treated the cut with cinnamon. But of course the leaf is still growing with purple spots.

I moved the plant away from others, to a more ventilated area. And am being more careful to water only in morning. Otherwise the plant seems strong, roots look okay, other leaves are strong, and even new stems are growing.

I'm worried about the leaves that look sick. Should I cut it again and treat with cinnamon, or should I use something stronger. What do you suggest?

Thank you

Hi! Your phal looks perfectly healthy to me. The leaf coloration or light spotting is normal for some phal. hybrids. I would NOT cut any more on your leaves. The purple tint is probably from higher light. I don't see anything wrong with your phal. One of mine has a very deep purple tint and it is always like that.. from genetics.

Hi there and welcome. The plant does look OK but you may want to cut off the spikes as low as possible just to give plant more energy for leaf and root production.

Welcome. Yes, your leaves look perfectly normal. The spotting is just pigment and some species have that lovely pattern on the leaves that yours has.

As said above, the spotting is just normal pigmentation for these sort of Phals. As to the weird shape (aside from the fact that you've cut the leaf?) it looks like it's simply 2 leaves coming out at the same time. Though IMO I wouldn't cut the new spike just yet.

Unfortunately I did not take a picture of the leaf when i cut it. It has been quite a while, maybe a month...few weeks for sure.

The leaf that i cut earlier was deformed, like it had a hole on its edge (not sure how to explain). But then it was not so spotty. Or do I remember wrong
Now the shape of the leaf that is coming out looks normal, except the cut. But the spots scared me, and got me thinking its still going to grow out weird again.

Thank you for your kind advice, gonna leave the leaves be for now.

I also find that my phal will also grow leaves out with some purple spotting that will eventually fade. I think the purple is there cause the leaf is new and adjusting to the light conditions.

I totally agree with a healthy plant and genetic pigmentation. In the future you can ask here with a photo before you cut away parts.
In general if in doubt it is better to make a test cut into the tissue than to leave sick tissue connected to healthy parts.

Nothing to add to what's already making consensus.

The deformed leaf can have multiple origins so it would have been interesting to see it. A deformed leaf may not be a beauty but it's still a working leaf, here you may have deprived your phal of ugly but useful leaf.
