Discoloration on new Aerangis punctata
Default Discoloration on new Aerangis punctata

Hey OrchidBoard,

So I finally got my first big-boy shipment of orchids. They're all beautifully healthy, except for perhaps this one. I'm not overly concerned since I have two weeks to return it (so if it declines rapidly, I'll just return it), but I want to know what you guys think.

It's a tiny Aerangis punctata. It's roots look great, but the top-most leaf looks like it is yellowing from the base outward, a classic sign of crown rot in my experience. If it is crown rot, how likely is it that a monopoidal species like this will send out another growth?

Or it's nothing and I'm way paranoid about one of my new babies.

Thank you for looking,
CJ

That certainly IS small!

I'm not seeing rot...but I see what you mean by the yellowing. Could be mechanical damage from being shipped. Maybe? Then again...it could be nothing. ?? Hard to tell really.

With a plant so small, if it's going to go wrong...it'll likely happen pretty quickly so just keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the reassurance!

Its looking more pink than yellow now, so I'm thinking less "rot" and more "stress from shipping." I'll post more pictures as it's condition gets better or worse.

This "yellowing" is probably the normal new leaf coloring. Like some orchids, like phals and catts, the new leaf color is sometimes slightly different than the leaf as it ages. Give it some time. If you need further assistance email Andy's orchids. He advertises here. Also a very good source of info is Lico Orchids in Encinitas, Ca. 760-942-3785. Nico can give you very good info on most orchids.

So I definitely think this was just packing stress/new leaf color/me being paranoid. Here's a pic of it now, perked up and hopefully ready to grow!! Thank you for your comments and considerations.
