Mealybug random question...

Keep your eyes on the affected and all newly bought orchids for more mealy bugs for a few weeks.

My experience...The first time I saw mealy bugs in real life ever, was on the back of phalaenopsis flowers bought at a grocery store.
There were a few big ones and I handpicked them off. That was the end and I was like, mealy bugs are nothing. lol

Then, the second "sighting" came with a dendrobium I got from a meeting. The entire plant and flowers were literally covered with them!!! I washed them off as much as I could. I isolated the plant for over one month. I kept finding one here and there, the whole time! After that one intensive month, I did not see any more on that plant.

A few months of mealy bugs free peace again, until I found a few on some of the paphiopedilums I bought this year. I have bought so many paphiopedilums and nothing ever came with bugs of any sort until this year.

Now, I'm scared of buying any more paphs. lol
I threw them all away, and only clinging to one venustum alba I bought in May at a show.
It looked so "clean" at the time of purchase. Then I came home, and a few days later, I see these little white fuzzy stuffs on the back of the leaves. I handpicked them off. I sprayed it down insectididal soap (which by the way is not a big gun, it's probably the "safest" spray to use). Well, I was hoping it would kill whatever's left, and I did think for a few weeks, until I saw thee more just yesterday!!!
I don't know where they came from, but apparently they survived the spray. maybe they were hiding deep inside the crack at the center of each fan??
I made sure I filled every crack with the spray.
Now I'm about to just toss it. I mean it's a loss, but venustum is readily available if I ever wanted again.

At this point, I'm just panicing about any potential spread to my other slippers, which I have many.

So, don't think you got rid of your mealy bugs after spraying and not seeing any for a while because there are still there somewhere. You have to keep checking the back of the leaves every night (they seem more active at night) for over one month.
If you do not see any for that long, you might be able to say they are gone.

I wish you all the best.

Oh, by the way, I used insecticidal soap and rose 3 in 1 stuff (I think sulfur was the main ingredient along with other stuff in this particular product, Safers I think)
I just hate spraying because one, I hate the smell of it, two, every time I smell it no matter how much I take caution not to breathe in, I feel like I'm damaging my body somewhere. lol

After all, we are more important than plants, right?

So, people, what works the best?

Ugh! My problem too is that I have dogs and a cat- all curious. So I'll have to put this plant in the laundry room, I think- which has no windows. I'll have to check the label of the insecticidal soap though- maybe it's safe for pets. I've never seen the animals lick or chew the plants but that doesn't mean they don't. I guess I should really be super safe and keep it in isolation for at least a full life cycle. I just have too many other plants in other places waiting to be moved once they are out of "new plant quarantine"...oh, the travails of the orchid lover!!!

Of course, not that I hovered over my plants too much before...I know what I'll be doing tonight with the plants that were on the table with this phal. Better get some more cotton and isoproyl alcohol tonight too!

I don't think insecticidal soap or other relatively milder sprays will hurt the animals big time, but I would not want them to ingest it or come into contact with it.

If you don't see bugs on the plant, you don't have to use alcohol just to wipe. I don't think it's the best thing for the plant applying it on a regular basis.

If you have the time and energy, frequent inspection as I said is the best bet.
You get to kill whatever's out crawling around, and you get to see the conditions, or the existence of the infestation to do what's necessary.

Thanks...I'll keep it away from the animals while I'm treating it. It just won't get much light for the next few weeks.

Welp, I just unpotted the Chia-Shing Royal and I see ZILCH. Nothing in the media, no evidence of anything anywhere in the plant. It's pristine. ??? I cleaned it and gave it a good treatment with insecticidal soap and will repot into new media and a new pot once it's dry and keep it in quarantine. I'm just so bemused. I'm eyeing Surf Song suspiciously, since her leaves are a bit dusty and she was next to the Chia-Shing Royal, but there are no other signs. I don't want to tear apart that whole table of orchids for no reason. Oig! One stinking bug has me on edge!

Oh, that was awful. I guess the good news is I don't have a quarantine room issue anymore since nearly every orchid in that room needed to be treated. Seriously, I guess these little...jerks (I don't know the profanity rules here, ha) hatched over the last couple of days. A couple of orchids had no signs so I moved them to the dresser in the room and sprayed them down with isopropyl alcohol for now. 6 plants are hanging out waiting to dry from their insecticidal soap baths including Paph Pinocchio which had creatures in its new bud! Gross! It was the only one with mealies all over the roots. I'm pinning EVERYTHING on him. Haha. Anyway, he's soaking in soap for a few hours. Pots are hanging out in a bleach solution. I need a drink...and to add bleach to the grocery list.

Bastards! (there, I said it for you) Bummer on the bugs but at least you know what you're dealing with now and you can work to get it under control.

Personally...if I had mealies on more than one or two plants...and more than just a couple of the little buggers...the big guns would be coming out. I don't have the patience required to deal w/a major infestation using the more benign treatments. Nope...give me a good systemic w/some residual so any future hatchlings get zapped the minute they start to feed.

Is that the bayer 3 in 1? Would you repot everything then to get the roots?

Or I guess it would be the Rose and flower dual action- with the systemic that works for 30 days. Welp! Trip to Lowe's with a side stop at the $3 clearance rack will be fun.
