Question ?'s About Bayer Advanced

This is the 'All in One', 3 Systemic Products in One. It's the one you water with not the spray kind.

Reading the instructions for Roses, it calls for 2 ounces per quart of water which adds up to 8 ounces of product per gallon.

Use every 6 weeks for control and feed. Use every 4-5 weeks in areas of frequent disease or sandy soil.

My questions are- Since there are no directions for orchids (not surprising) would you use the Rose strength?

I have my doubts that it will work a full six weeks considering that most orchids are not in soil. How often would you use it to rid plants of mealies?

Any other suggestions and/or information would be great, too.

Thanks in "Advanced"

I use the 3-in-1 as a liquid the way it's supposed to be used and I also keep a spray bottle full of it for the mounts and vandas. I use 3 tablespoons in a gallon of water and it keeps things working fine. Keep in mind most of my plants are in aliflor so I don't get a lot of the problems that come along with bark decomposition.

Thank you very much!
I will keep this in mind as I'm doing more mounts these days.

I used the Bayer Advanced at the recommended amount of 2 oz per quart of water. It's been nearly 2 months now......

The roots on my cattleya's look brown/black. Especially the the babies and teenagers. The adults look fairly good.

Leaves look dehydrated. Kind of wrinkled. Roots outside the pots look pretty good except a few that have some brownish looking spots.

There has been no other treatment or fertilizer used during this time period. Root death is causing root rot.

Plus...the dang mealies are back on the catts that were big and mostly faired okay through this.

Now, I'm afraid to use anything!!!

We've had day after day of cold, dark, cloudy weather. This isn't good growing weather!! The only good news outta this situation is almost everything has new growth with new roots coming on....if the rot doesn't get to them before I can pull them outta their pots and do surgery and pot into fresh pots and medium.

Any comment, suggestions, ANYTHING!!! will be appreciated!

Since my initial post, I have talked with several local people who have had root damage with the Bayer 3 in 1 product. There are three types of Bayer products - the one with the fertilizer in it will probably damage roots.
The Tree and shrub has one ingredient - Merit or Ibicloprid which is recomended for scale by the Florida ag service. I have used Tree and Shrub for several years with good results. Will get the name of the other one and edit this post tomorrow.

Often the things that are safe for roses are OK on orchids (fungicides and insecticides) However the fertilizer and maybe other concentrations will be very high. You should read the concentrations on the label and do the calculations. See this post as an idea. remember there are 2 tablespoons in an ounce and three teaspoons in a tablespoon.

I've used imidacloprid products on non-orchid plants for years. They work great on mealy and pretty much every other sucking insect (not mites though).

I have no personal experience using these products on orchids, but I would suggest you either go with the spray form or the tree & shrub, but get a formulation that is just the insecticide, without fertilizer added. Check the label to be sure it's listed for orchids. Good luck!
