Coffee grounds also add a hint of acidity to your plants media works wonders for my hydrangea and Gardenia. I also use cornmeal around my plants. The ants eat it and blow up. from cornmeal expanding. Works wonders for me and I am not using hard core toxins outside where my dog or any of the wild life wont get sick from them.

Oh and being a country kid who used to have a big garden. Hot coffee that you are not going to drink poured over the ants bed kills the little buggers too and keeps them away. Kept my bare feet fire ant bite free.
