Do you mean the darker tissue at the base of the leaves? If so, that's quite normal and I'd even say a sign that they're healthy.

Now that I know mine is healthy, I'll say yes. My home is unusual in that the humidity tends to stay above 50%. Not sure if they need that. Plants are easy to grow when you have the climate and conditions they like. Someone from your climate can give you a better idea on how to grow them where you live.

Not only is it normal but if grown well that color can begin to create a beautiful and dynamic pattern as the plants grow. There is one neo, who's name i cannot remember, that begins to show what I can only describe as a rope look to it's stem. It's quite beautiful.

That would be very cool. I just have 2 Neos. One is a Shutanno and the other has no name. The third one died. Name began with K, but I don't remember rest.
