not sure if these are harmful to orchids as my research says they are predatory, but I noticed them after watering a 6in orchid potted in sphagnum moss. For some reason I took a close look at the clear pot after watering - and then noticed hundreds of larvae scurrying around, and also at least 2 adults. The larvae are white, and in varying sizes. The adults are a brick-red and about 3/4in long.
I watered the pot with a neem oil solution - and presto, they died on contact.
Has anyone any further info on these ? I am now wondering what these were living off of/feeding on......

Yeah, centipedes are pretty much all predatory, and I can't imagine they'd be doing any harm to your plants. Some of them do have a very painful "bite", but typically they are going to scurry away from any perceived threat, so it's unlikely you'd have to worry about that unless you're trying to pet them or pinch their cheeks.

They live and feed off all kinds of little critters, flies & gnats, other centipedes, spiders, pill bugs, roaches, and the list goes on. They go into pots because the pots offer a dark, humid, and protected environment that they and many of their prey items prefer.

I dunno how good you are at identifying critters, but if there's any possibility you discovered millipedes instead, those tend to be deteriorates that eat dead and decaying plant matter. They are also fairly common, and prefer dark, humid hideaways.

definitely a type of centipede, confirmed with photos on internet too.
I wonder if they consume mealy bugs and mites. I think I will leave the next lot alone, if any did survive....
