Just for precaution, when you have orchids that are sending up new shoots at the base, examine them every evening just in case. I find that the bushsnails love to eat those tender new growths.

Even if you don't see any, they might be inside the pot eating up roots.

I do not use hydrogen peroxide as I had terrible results on leaves, so I'm not going to take a chance on the roots which I don't plan to take out and check every so often. I don't like to disturb roots ever! well, except for a really really needed repotting of course. :)

Hydrogen peroxide is a great way to kill fungus gnat larvae as well!

I'm usually too busy picking up all the snails on the ground, hadn't thought about them living in the pots. (Still very new at this orchid growing thing.)

How big are these bush snails? That could explain some damage I have seen recently. Would you dilute the peroxide if you are going to soak the plant?

Hi Alsani, the snails I encountered are no bigger than 1 or 2 mm, but I've seen that bigger ones can affect orchids as well, those are usually common in gardens. The peroxide was not diluted but used straight from the bottle, the concentration was 3% and I wouldn't use anything stronger than this straight from the bottle. There are other pesticides out there that can be used, I just stay away from anything that looks like pebbles, as my pet bird would surely be attracted to it if by any chance it gets in my growing room, I try to keep her away from it but you never know :) so the peroxide treatment was safer for me.

Thanks OrchidGirl. I'm only used to the 1-inch diameter snails. Easier to pick out. :-) I have caught them climbing up other plant stems and trellises (sp?). Will keep this remedy in mind for the future.

1. Add a little dish soap to the water if you soak your pots. I've soaked as long as two days... I think that the soap might help you get some of the eggs.

2. Lettuce. Slugs and snails like lettuce more than life. I use romaine... Put a leaf on top of your pot or anywhere in your collection. Use lots of leaves for big collections. Collect them in the morning. You will be amazed.

Oh, and you can reuse the romaine lettuce leaves for a few days depending on the humidity...

Do you rinse with water after soaking in H2O2?

CO.O ----- that was the days of the hydrogen peroxide gang. Some members here recommend caffeine or coffee 'grounds' water solution to handle snails these days. There is acidity, but pretty sure that a flush later with water, or adequate watering after the treatment will lead to good results.

All that nitrogen won’t burn the roots?

Ray mentioned he used coffee grounds. Somebody else used coffee too. I assume they can water it in, and deal with the snails first. And then give a nice flush out with water.
