Could be. What is important for this plant is what I wrote. the plant will make new growths and those are what is important now. The new growth is the future here. The current growth is only here to supply nutrients and water to the future growth which is where next seasons flowers will come from. And get your kitty a box.

My kitties have 2 boxes. She's just a stupid little kitten. I got the plant out, trimmed the squishy roots (which was most of them, but the plant already looked like that when I repotted it the first time, not that long after getting it) and put it in a small pot with just enough moss to cover the roots. I managed to position it so it doesn't tip over. I was wondering though - should I leave that oldest kind of woody bit from where the roots grow? I trimmed a bit of it because it looks dead anyways but didn't want to get rid of all of it. It's kind of brown and black.

You can take off anything that is obviously dead or diseased. Put powdered cinnamon on the cut. That new growth is very important so take good care of it. Clean up all the other growth like the dead papery sheath material. Tooth brush can get most of it off. There are more growth buds hiding at the base of the old pbulbs.
