They may just have already have had it...and it was laying dormant....Mine that came together that the one had the black rot died rather rapidly...then the other one seemed to have just sprouted it and died with in about 4 months just poof dead from black rot or bacterial infection.....Don't fell bad again sorry your baby died, also some lighter/dried out media floats and has to be re soaked....

UM yes use the pictures and send that to them as well, to help make sure they get that you have some issue with the plants you just recently ordered from them!

Cattleyas are rather different from other orchids and I think that now that you know how to grow them, you won't have any further trouble. Just plant them on top of a well-draining medium with just the roots in the medium, the rest of the orchid above, in a pot that barely fits the roots, and give them that extra dose of calcium. Give them a south-facing window or, if you live in a warm climate, put them outside in a place that gets morning sun and shade for the afternoon. They like plenty of light. Water well, let them dry out completely (should happen in two or three days), then water again.
I wouldn't ask for a refund or replacement from a vendor unless the problem was obvious when the orchid arrived. It really isn't fair to the vendor if there is a chance that culture played a part in the orchid's demise. If your orchid had been infected with black rot upon arrival, it would have been dead in a week at most. I would chalk this up as a learning experience. Good luck with the new ones.

I'm not sure, I suggest that you start a new thread with this question, this way there will be more ppl (who do actually know the answer, I say this because I think with Calcium Nitrate, you use it differently than the products suggested earlier in the thread, but I'm not sure) that will see it, and be able to answer your question more thoroughly.
