Unhappy Feline Orchidophagia

Our new house cat has developed a fondness for the leaves of one of my favorite Paphs which is conveniently situated for his grazing pleasure. It's hard to imagine where I could display my orchids that he couldn't reach.

Of course I know about "cat grass" and will be getting some today, but is there anything I can spray or paint on orchid leaves to discourage feline orchidophagia without making the plants look too weird? I have some insecticidal soap in a spray bottle, and I've heard of hot pepper oils being used on other plants.

Get some Grinnicks apple bitter spray. It's non toxic but it tastes horrible. All it is is a mixture of isopropal alcohol, aka rubbing alcohol, and some bitter extracts.
Hope this helps. My boyfriend's cat has been eyeing my orchids and we keep the door closed at all times to that room. Not only would he probably eat them, he likes to climb and knock stuff over.

There is an electronic device meant for keeping cats off furniture. I think one brand is called Scat Mat. It gives a very mild shock when the cat steps on it. Strategic placement of one of these might deter the cat from approaching the orchid.

Various "bitter apple" concoctions should do the trick, as Purple_Phal_Gal13 suggests. I also have the Grannicks on hand (mostly for the dogs - our cat does not bother the plants).

Yes the bitter stuff works great .... until you get that one weirdo who actually likes the taste of it!

I read in another post, that putting a little olive oil and some chile keeps cats from eating your orchids. I have not try it yet.

I'd be wary of using oil. When the plant is in the sun, it can get "cooked"

I recommend an laid back attitude. Once kitty knows your are attached to a particular plant, it will be toast.

I am having the same problem with one of my cats and a Paph. I am planning to use Ssscat spray since it always happens at night when I am not in the room.
