Black spots on Cattleya leaf! Help!
Default Black spots on Cattleya leaf! Help!

I saw these black spots this morning after watering them.
It seems to also have two tiny bumps that will not come off!

It is a beautiful orange Cattleya called Fiery.

I got it a couple of days ago but had not really noticed this!

What is it? Should I cut the leaf off?

Thank you in advance for any help.

What does the rest of the plant look like? If you have lots of leaves, you can cut it off, but if there's just a few leaves, you may want to wait. If it's a leaf spotting fungus, it's unsightly but not dangerous to the plant. But it might be a bacteria problem that could harm the orchid. Wipe both sides of all the leaves with soap and water. Put plant in good light and make sure it's in an area that gets some good air circulation. Physan 20 would help but it's probably not available in your country. If the one leaf keeps getting worse, cut it off. Aside from that, I don't know what to tell you. Good luck.

Black spots on Cattleya leaf! Help!
Default Thank you so much

Thank You Tucker85! I bought these plants from my local Walmart a couple of days ago and they looked fine. Yesterday saw those black spots on the orange Cattleya, the flowers seem to be spotted also today

Today I've noticed that a couple of other orchids also have. The Dendrobium Urchin and another Cattleya, and whitish stains on another Catt leaf! all from the same store!

I have on hand Garden Safe Fungicide 3 but it seems to be for mites more than anything. Here's more pics. What do you think?

A couple of those look like old leaves that are dying off. Give the plants good culture and they should be fine. A dose of the fungicide might help also.

Okay! I'll do that, I'll spray them and isolate and see what happens because frankly I'm just so sad I don't even want to think about it anymore!

I've been searching for answers and everything I found is serious! I've gotten 11 orchids so far, (the others are from Home Depot)and the thought of losing them all is so upsetting

Thank you so much Tucker 85! God Bless!

The white stains looks like the residue left from a spray of fungicide or something from the grower. The residue doesn't mean that the chemical is still helping the plant fight anything off...just staining. One of the pots looks like it has some clear plastic over the bark. I would remove all wrapping in order to let the orchid receive air circulation. The one picture with the yellow leaf tip could be old age or Anthracose (sp.). I will be back to add with an edit a link to a webiste to look at for disease and insects. It is a good one to use for reference. I hope they all do well for you.

Well, since I really don't like the way they're looking, and I'm freaked out by all of this.

and those Catts were $40 each! I thought I'd take the bull by the horns.

I cut off the affected leaves. With a sterile scissors.

I had some Cipro 750mg. left over from a scrip my daughter had had changed a while ago, so I crushed one in 32oz of water and fed it to them!

I also sprayed them with the Fungicide 3.

If they're going to die it won't be from lack of trying

I cannot do anything else at the moment as I do not drive due to a cataract that I'm going to have surgically a addressed soon. and both of my (still live at home) children are at work. So this is all I had at the moment.

"Is it doesn't kill them it will strengthen them" that's for sure. I will keep you posted. I will spray every day a little also and see what happens

Doing the not so happy orchid two step

Hello everybody! I wanted to let you all know that the orchids, so far, so good. They do not have any new spotting and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My daughter took me to Home Depot on Wednesday evening to look for a better fungicide.

Did not find any but, oh my gosh! what I did find was that all the orchids that were not in bloom were tucked away in a stand in the nursery and were 40% off!

Well, as you can imagine I bought two very healthy looking Cattleyas! It will be a surprise when they bloom but I'm hoping for yellow or orange to complement what I already have.

But it really doesn't matter, as long as they're healthy! (Does that sound familiar?.....hmmm....

Default Update to Cattleya with black spotted leaves

Wanted to thank you all again for all of the advice and comforting words. Thank you!

The orchids seem to be doing okay. No new spots on any of them

I have re-potted with new medium bark orchid mix,and am watching closely.

Hopefully all will remain well, but whatever happens I know I can count on all of the lovely people on this board to help

Again thanks! ))
