Hello,
I live in Sausalito and was having the same problem. I started reporting my masdevallia in New Zealand sphagnum moss and no longer have that problem. My have just started to bloom.

Thanks, it is a Masdevallia veitchiana. It grows really well for me outside on the shady side of my deck.
