yellow streaked and spotted phal leaves - Orchid Board

Do you think this is bacterial? If so, what treatment do you suggest? If not, what do you feel the problem is...and how should I treat it? By the way, I failed to mention that none of these areas are soft and mushy....all are firm. Also, I cannot tell yet if the small, new leaves are going to be affected.

I do not think it is bacterial.
While I'm not 100% sure, I would think three possibilities.
Fungal, viral, microfungus.

I had three or four of my phals that developed something similar. I tossed them all.

I'm not suggesting you do the same, but it's just that I have lots of other plants and phals being highly replaceable, I just didn't want to worry and get stressed over unpleasant mystery.

It could just be some physiological issues that is not necessarily pathogenic in nature, but I have read a lot about similar possible causes but never any clear cut anwswers on this kind of leaf issues on phals.

hence, lots of headache and I got rid of them.

I've had both of these plants for a few years...can a virus just "appear" on a plant that has looked fine in the past?
Also, do you mind explaining to me the difference in fungal and microfungus?

This is a good website with pictures and description of the main orchid diseases.

Many perfectly healthy looking phals carry virus affecting other plants. I know, it sounds really crazy but that is the danger of virus as many infected plants are asymptomatic.
This is why it is so important to practice sanitary and caution anytime working with orchids.

So yeah, virused but asymptomatic orchids can suddenly exhibit symptoms for some reasons.

The different between fungal and microfungus, well, it can be difficult because there are so many different fungal disease. The most common fungal disease that affect phals are probably the crown rot and the black rot of the roots.
The microfungus shows up on leaves as small brown sunken spots that get larger and larger eventually killing the leaves in a matter of just one or two weeks. I don't think yours look like it though on the second look. The leaf surface look even, right?

Only systemic fungicide will take care of microfungus. Many people find it easy to just toss the affected plants unless they are highly valuable. This is good because the disease is highly infectious. Many growers wrongly assume this disease as something else like mites or virus and do not toss or treat. As a result, they lose considerably amount of phals to this disease when it hits.

So I think we can safely narrow down the cause between viral or physiological. or something else we don't know.

I know. it's a headache. I hate diseases.

Thank you...you've helped me understand so much better. Thanks also for the link, I'm saving it to look back on. I'm not sure yet what I will do with these two phals, but you've given me some good food for thought.

Yes, I agree...diseases are certainly a headache, especially for me when I haven't a clue what the problem is and what to do to treat it.

Yea, I second what NY said, and I've seen these leaf marks too, thru other's pictures, but no sure diagnosis, and there's no way to know what it is, so it REALLY IS just a huge headache! Sorry, I hope you can stop it, or replace the phal in question.

I think these signs are due to the effects of pests which are in you plants ans put their effects on it. First of all you need to clean up the area of garden and spray on the plants to remove these pests as soon as possible. If pest are removed plants will grow fast and you feel a huge differ in these.Professional experienced company

Pests?? What type of pests?? By the way, none of my orchids are in a garden...they are in a greenhouse.
