Wonder Nishii dropping leaves
Default Wonder Nishii dropping leaves

Worried about my Den. Wonder nishii developing yellow leaves which then dry and drop off.
This is occurring on the smaller canes. Canes then yellow, but are dry, not mushy.
No 'ring' noted as mentioned in another thread.
The larger canes and leaves still look green and happy.

Repotted this plant not long ago.....it was severely rootbound and a number of roots were dead and removed.

Is this something to be concerned about or simply 'normal'?
My other orchids (catts, onc, dtps, b, vasco, etc) all doing well...but this is only den I have.
Quite new at orchid culture, and admittedly hooked, but still stumbling my way along. So....guidance is appreciated!

Thanks for any advise.

Some Dens resent any change in environment. That would include repotting, moving it from one side of the room to the other. They show they are sulking by dropping leaves. Can you see any new growth?

Hey Terri, thanks for the reply!
No new growth of canes noted. Do spot some healthier roots as I poke around the base that I suspect are new.
Repotted about three weeks ago when I first noted some yellowing smaller leaves. Was amazed at what I found. Basically a tight ball of many bad appearing roots and virtually no medium! It had just about finished flowering when I bought it this past winter in Florida. Looked good for a bit so did not check pot until symptoms started.
My other orchids are showing good new growth. They were repotted about the end of Feb.
Thanks again for the help.

This is a latouria Den - they do like to remain moist. Chunky bark chips (especially when fresh) may require frequent watering.

And, like Terri said, many Dens can sulk after re-pot. But also make sure media is remaining lightly and evenly moist.

Hey Sonya,
I appreciate the advise. Will try to keep it a bit more on the moist side and see if it likes that. Now that it has warmed up, it will spend more time outside in more sun...although under some shade during midday.
Hopefully it will get happy.
I had one disaster this winter in the greenhouse. Heat went out for the one night in early spring and of course went way below freezing outside. Temp inside GH recorded as 29. My Oncidium St Anthony of Egypt which was blooming beautifully close to the door was NOT happy. ...Will try to attach pic of it before the big chill.)
Everything died back to the pseudobulbs...but I did not give up on it. I now see some new shoots appearing!
So....I will see if I can get this Den through hard times as well.
Thanks again.
Tom

It isn't spider mites is it? Usually when I find new growth yellowing off they are the reason.

Otherwise, latoureas like moisture as already stated. Coming into warmer weather you should keep them watered well especially in chunky bark like that.
