Pseudobulb chewed up- Dend. Capituliflorum Female
Default Pseudobulb chewed up- Dend. Capituliflorum

Here is the picture . Something chewed up the base area facing wall . Plant hangs from a high branch of a Plumeria tree , far from the wall. I am not aware of any rodents but do have squirrels around but this happened overnight, and there are no grasshoppers etc yet. I am thinking of enclosing it in a net.I applied some alcohol to reduce infection. Is there anything else I can do to help the psedobulbs?
Would these pseudobulbs bloom? Should I cut them off?
Hoping to get some help, I would love to see blooms.

Looks like what squirrels have done to my collection at times in the past, I think they're attracted to the carbs in the pseudobulbs. If it's happening overnight I'd suspect rats, they're almost as good at climbing as squirrels. Might be slugs or snails, but looks a little too raggedy and crude to me to be their handiwork.

Thanks. I care for my plants mostly in the morning hence I notice stuff at that time only. It was fine one day and chewed up when i saw next morning. So the critter may have done it during the day which I would not notice, or night.
Is there any way of protecting from further damage? Would this one bloom? It is one of the fattest growth and I was hoping to see flowers.

It certainly might still bloom, most Dens are pretty tough and it doesn't look like the growth is chewed all the way through. I hope it does, capituliflorum is an awesome and IMO underappreciated species!

The squirrels at my place mostly went for cirrhopetaloid Bulbos and over the course of a week totally destroyed several nice specimens I'd had for years. They also went across my bench and took chunks out of just about anything with a succulent pseudobulb or leaf. I used to find squirrels cute and charming, now I just look at them as larcenous tree-rats with gaudy tails...

I was able to prevent more damage to my plants by covering them with bird netting, the cheapo kind with a plastic grid of 1 cm squares. It would probably work best on top of a frame to hold it up off the plants, but I just laid it right on top of my plants and bench and that worked fine. If they'd been determined enough they could have still gotten to the plants but I guess they didn't want to tangle with the netting. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the advise. Sorry to hear about damage to your orchids. Hope they recovered and bloomed. Cirrhos probably take a while though. Your squirrel description is so accurate....and funny. Well, they are no fun when they eat our plants.
I saved some nets from orange and potato bags a while ago because I thought I may need them someday. Here is my capituliflorum all dressed up. May be chewers will leave it alone now.

Sorry for rotated picture, I did not realize before posting that I is rotated.
