What made these "tracks"? Male
Default What made these "tracks"?

Hey everyone;
Just purchased two B. dygbyana x L. purpurata crosses that I found in the "bagged orchids" at Lowe's. One looked really healthy and I really did not inspect the second one as I got distracted. When I got home, I placed both under my florescent lights and then I noticed dark spots on the one I had not looked at quite so well. Upon inspection, I found the underside of the leaf had indentations with what looks like little "tracks" leading from them. The top of the leaf does not look bad but near the base of the leaf there is yellowing in blotches. On the one plant, four leaves have these markings.
I took pics and would appreciate any input as to what I brought home.

Isn't it always the one you don't look at well? Any help is appreciated!

It looks to me like mesophyll cellular collapse. It's not a disease. It's often caused by very cold water getting on the leaves but I think there are other causes also. Of course the spots won't go away but it doesn't damage the plant and won't spread. Just to be sure, it wouldn't hurt to check for mites also. Take a moist white paper towel and wipe it across the underside of the leaf. If you see tiny red spots on the towel, then you have mites on the plant. My guess is that you won't see any mites and it's cellular collapse.

I've had this sort of thing before, and like Tucker suggested it did not hard the plant and did not spread. I can't confirm the cause, but I think if there are no mites then I would not worry about it.

Tucker and rlilia:
Thank you, Thank you Thank you! I was really concerned, but the one thing I forgot to mention and which piqued my interest was all the indentations and spots were located on the upper tow or three inches of the 4 leaves. When you bunch them together, it is almost as if something occurred to the tips of the leaves, but not lower on the leaf - I thought perhaps some damage led to the scarring.
I will be hitting it with the initial fungicide and will be placing the plant in a CO2 tank to take care of any bugs or eggs.
Am was concerned because I really like this cross; it is now listed on google under "rhyncholaelia dygbyana x Laelia purpurata" - really nice lip structure and color!
Thanks for the smoothing of my feathers!
Steve

Same as our fellows here, I'd wait to see if something grows out of it or not, check for mites, and maybe as preventive spray a few times with a cinnamon decoction.

If there's a fungus it'll spread.
If there's mites too.

Both are cared about by the decoction. Keep us informed.
