Default Possible orchid fleck/mosaic ID please

Hi,

This is my first post to the forum, so, welcome me I am an orchid noob, so will likely be calling on your expertise a fair bit.

In this case, I have a cymbidium which looks a little dodgy. I was thinking it could be orchid fleck/mosaic virus. Initially I wasnt to worried ablut it, but new growth has pale stripes through it.

The last 3 pics are of an another species (the cross between oncidium and odoglossum which I cant recall the name of). I dont think it is orchid fleck, but could be due to water. I am told that some species don't like to be wet at night or they may produce similar symtoms?

Anyway, ill leave it to the experts to provide some advice.

Thanks!

Hello Orchiddude!
First, I am no expert, but I think that you have an ondontocidium (oncidium X odontoglossum). I don't collect a lot of the oncidium, cymbidium, and ondotoglossum species or hybrids due to their ease of spotting and I always feel "iffy" about them. Now the stripes on the new growth would really concern me. The spots and stripes are pretty well formed around the veins of the leaf and that also sends red flags up for me.
I will let someone with better disease recognition state what they think, but again, this is why I have only a few of these varieties in my collection.
Hope the ID helps!
Steve

Thanks for your feedback stray. I do need to clarify that the pics above are of 2 different plants, the first 4 being of a cymbidium, and the last 3 from a different species (Odontocidium as stray has pointed out). As can be seen from pics, they are suffering from different symptoms. I probably should have created separate posts, but I thought I would chuck the Odontocidium in while i was posting.

Out of interest stray...what species do you focus on growing?

I would be very concerned as well if I had that sort of spotting. I am not a disease expert but here is a little reading that may be helpful:

Thanks for the trouble of posting those links. I have moved the cym and am leaning towards it being possible viral, although, I would love to hear the opinons of others.

The other plant, I am assuming is fungal, and will give a spray with copper hydroxide.

on one of the links, it says not to use copper hydroxide on dendrobiums... any reason why?

I think that copper might be harmful to dendrobiums. I don't know. I was going to spray all my orchids this summer when I spray my fruit trees but the fungicide contains copper so I will need to do some research. Sorry about the possible virus.

That is always my fear...that orchid viruses might spread to things like my fruit/nut trees or those expensive/difficult to find plants I grow inside.

Difficult to tell but there's high chances it's fungal or bacteria (does it oozes, smells?), cut the offending leaves (at least an inch further than the spots or more), treat against fungus (go systemic) and put cinnamon on the cuts. Set it to dryer and cooler conditions if possible with air movement and separated from others.

To me it doesn't look first thing like a virus, and only a test can clear this.

Keep us informed.

Thanks for your advice. I have not noticed any oozing or smells. I will cut back leaves as suggested. as far a further treatment, would foliar spray with copper hydroxide solution, and pot dipped in copper hydroxide solution be a suitable treatment?

Thanks
