I would guess that water got in the crown and has caused some rot. It is really important that water not be allowed to rest int eh crown. I even use a paper towel to wick out any moisture after watering. You cana slo just give it a good strong blow.
Not sure if the rot is sufficient that you have los the plant's crown. if the crown is lost, you might get a basal keiki. Try hard to keep the crown dry and see what happens. you can also try dabbing with hydrogen peroxide but the brown part won't go away just wont spread.
