Virus or Cold damage in Cattleya? Male
Default Virus or Cold damage in Cattleya?

I just opened a package from Hawaii that took almost a week to get here. I live in nc and the night time temps the last few days have been in the upper 30's and very low 50's during the day.

my suppliers supply of test strips is out and I am concerned about this plant. There are two leaves (one is newer looking but not the newest growth) that are like this and some mild chlorophyll variation

Is this a virus or damage from the cold? it barely goes through on one of them and not at all on the other streak.

I'm no expert but as this is on the leaf edges, I would suggest cold damage. Could you contact the supplier and ask them about it? If it is virus I think it would have already been on the leaf when they shipped it. I can't see a reputable supplier shipping it like that.

I would guess cold damage. I've had one do something similar where a leaf was pressed against the window and I think got too cold as a result (during some very cold weather here a couple of weeks back).

I have tested the plant for CymMV and orsv and got negative results. I am guessing you guys were right and it is cold damage

Just want to share--my cattleya leaf looks exactly the same! My plant suffered from heat damage because apparently the 100 deg+ weather baked the box that the orchid was shipped in. Either way, heat and cold both cause cell collapse...

And also, the damaged portions heal quickly, so your plant is definitely OK!
