Another way to get rid of critters is to soak the pots in a bucket or laundry tub for a half hour to drown whatever is lurking. I do this twice, a week apart, to catch any that may have hatched from eggs. As I bring plants inside for colder weather, I do this if a plant seems ant-infested.
