Phal leave problems..wilted & turning yellow
Unhappy Phal leave problems..wilted & turning yellow

Good morning,

I desperately need advise for my phal. I have two phals at my office and several at home. In the past month, one of the one's at home passed away from crown rot. It prompted me to do phal research and seek help. Now all my phal's are in proper pots w/ ventilation. Now I thought all my phals were fine, until I got to the office this morning and my two year old phal is sick. The leaves are wilted, soft to the touch and the steam went from nice green last week to orange & dry this week. Also, I have an arial root that was nice and green..now is drying out fast. I got really alarmed about the changes in my phal, since the leave signs are very similar to the one of my deceased phal. I repotted it last months and cut off some of it's roots that were rotted. I soaked the roots on cosan 20 to prevent infection and soaked the spag as well. I did not continue to soak it because i looked fine. Now, I plan to cut the stem and soak it again in cosan 20 and see if that helps...Any other ideas before I accidently kill another phal.

The flower spikes do die, some sooner than others. Some Phals can bloom off a spike for a long time, but they will peter out eventually - others bloom with a set number of blooms, and when those are done, the spike will die. So I don't know that that is anything to worry about on it's own. The plant looks a bit dehydrated, which could be either from underwatering OR overwatering (causing roots to rot, and plant cannot take up any water). I'd check the roots, first off.

I was just reading about dehydration on phal earlier today. I know for a fact that my poor phal had some root rot. I repotted it last month and cut the rotted roots. Now I'm trying to figure out how to deal with my phal dehydration issue. I read about soaking it and adding superthrive and sugar to give it energy and put the phal in the a bag to increase humidity. I hope i don't rot my poor phal more

My phal has wilted leaves, Beautiful new roots. All of this was there when i bought it plus it was in bloom. Now another leaf is wilting but roots are still beautiful. Any suggestions? Also on another one the root is dead but the tip is green. Whats up with that?

So when you repotted your phals into better ventilated pots, did you change the media as well? If so, your plant may just be going through a transition period. Sometimes they sulk when repotted, even if it's what's best for them. The spike may be dying because now the plant is using its energy to grow new roots.

Also, I am having trouble telling from the picture: do the lower leaves look worse than the upper leaves? Sometimes if the plant can't support all of its leaves, the lower ones start to die.

Also, what did you repot it in? Sometimes new medium (especially bark) dries out faster than older medium, so you may just need to water more for the next few weeks until the mix opens up
