OMG! I got serious thrips damage on my milt!!!
These little bugs must have hitchhiked on some of the flowers I brought home. They seemed to harmless at first. I thought they were only feeding on the pollens.
Now they are literally everywhere! They love regular flowering plants like annuals as I find TONS of them on those compared to just a few on orchids (and not even on all the orchids).
Now I'm not sure what to do because last time I tried the cinnamon extract spray and did harm than good. bugs are still around and I lost beautiful new cattleya blooms along with some dendrobiums and tuberous begonias ruined.
Today I found one of my Miltoniopsis is quite badly damaged. I noticed this weird pattern on the flowers and looked closer. I saw some thrips and something else that could be mite of some kind, but not the red spider mites.
They were also found on the leaves. The damage is similar to one done by red spider mites, the silvery rust look, plus very very small dark spots, which is the poo poo those little suckers left behind.
I ran alcohol soaked cotton balls along the leaves for quick fix for now. I may have to repeat. not sure how strong miltoniopsis leaves are to alcohol treatment.
All the damaged flowers, I picked and discarded.
The black marks on flowers are not insect damage by the way. I'm not sure, but suspect it's virus. I've seen that same thing on many cymbidium flowers as well.
