Systemic Pesticides - Orchid Board

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else here has ever used a systemic pesticide during the Summer. I use Bonide Systemic granules. I sprinkle a teaspoon every 4-6 weeks on the potting media of each plant. As I water it is absorbed by the orchids. I have not seen any ants, spiders, slugs, Scale or white fly since... You can find it at Southern States Cooperatives or any Bonide retailer.

I also use a 70 percent isopropol alcohol mister for black spot and fungus infections, works great.

Sounds good to me. I personally don't have the need, but for those that do, these should work fine.

This is good to know! Now if I could get something to repel (not kill) the frogs and lizards that love to lounge in my orchid pots on my lanai....or stop them from mating.

I do a lot of reading and research on orchid care and recently found a tip:

Go out and find those little lizards and frogs and put them in your greenhouse! They eat any bugs that might show up!

We have to keep an eye on the dog with the lizards (their tails are bad for them) but my orchid room has loads of them and enough frogs to have a symphony going all the time

If my lanai was not also considered living quarters for humans and my Persian I would be all for live and let live as far as our little Flo-dra critters go. But in the past they have have worn out their welcome with their dancing in my bark...pooping and selectively not eating mealy bugs and spider mites. I try to free them out of my pool cage if I get to them before my cat. Wish I had a set up like you Sue.....I'd be in orchid heaven.

I have found that when there are too many lizards in my lanai the best solution is setting out a couple "catchmasters" They are mouse and insect glue traps. It is a card with gluey stuff on it. I buy them at a "Do it yourseld exterminator shop". If you want to let the lizards go after you catch them on it drizzle cooking oil on it and gently use a toothpick to slowly release the little guy from the board. I don't always get to them in time because of where I have to attach the cards. I always have a few on the job eating a few bugs but the bigger ones have to go. As far as mating your on your own. Get more glue boards for them to dance on.
