Phalaenopsis mystery disease
Hi. Sorry for new thread and poor english. I must write here, after many hours which I spent with google.
I am from Czech Republic, small windowsill grower, but no matter how big is your collection, because diseases are problem for all. Growers shares in discussions many photos, which shows the same symptoms:

Firstly, it is no sunburn, no cold water, no colonies of spider mites.
What is it? Maybe viral infection, maybe bacteriose or unknown fungi?
Viral infections are big problem, watch here:
http://www.icogo.org/images/Dr._Chin...id_Viruses.pdf
This website determines these symptoms like viral:
Orchids from Green Drop Home - Orchids : Diseases and pests : Viral diseases. - orchids, rare plants, fertilizer, materials and equipment, all for hydroponics - Delivery of plants all over the world.
Is it really CymMV or ORV or their mixed infection?
I thought, that viroses are transportet mainly by insects or cutting tools, but these disease was spread on many plants in my collection in short time....... i don't know how! I hawe grown healthy plants for 15 years, without any spots.
I know typical viruses, like CymMV on cymbidium, phalaenopsisech, creates rather color changes, than cell colapse.
Is these disease anything new in our collections?
It look for me, very infectious and problematic!
Anybody could unravel the mystery.
Thank you, Karel Hajda.

Given the rather chilly weather in Europe lately and growing on a windowsill, could it perhaps be mesophyll cell collapse? Have a look at PP265/PP265: Physiological Disorders in Orchids: Mesophyll Cell Collapse and see if it matches you problem.

I don't know Karel. I'm dealing with the same thing, and have already lost about 12 plants. It's not mites, it's not sunburn, and it's not mesophyll cell collapse from being too cold. My conditions have not change significantly in the last 3 years. I did notice that it started spreading very quickly this summer (which is why I ruled out mesophyll cell collapse). I've been treating it as a micro fungus and treated it with Cleary's systemic fungicide. It slowed it down but didn't really stop it. I've started cutting off the affected leaves to see if that helps. It's so frustrating to not know what you are dealing with.

send samples to a lab and have it tested for virus, bacteria or fungus...its really hard to deduce from pictures...if it is spreading fast its bacterial or fungus infestation...virus takes a very slow devastation

1. Stop reading scary stories about viruses.
2. Treat with broad-spectrum insecticide like Bayer Calypso.
3. Treat with systemic fungicide.
4. Spray leaves with aspirin solution (~80mg/l). Do this no more than 1xmonth.
5. Avoid splashing water on leaves when watering and increase air movement.

I've written about this before on here. I have lost a number of Phals to it and I know a few in our society with the same problem. It is highly contagious to other Phals so immediate isolation is necessary. I've found it never goes away even tho every new leaf that grows looks clean and healthy....for a while. I have been free of the problem for about a year after tossing every infected one in the garbage, pots, clips and all. I also thoroughly sanitized the area where they were with bleach and refused to place another Phal there since, in case it isn't gone.
But lately a few suspicious spots have again on fairly new additions to my collection. This time I have experimented with cutting off the offending leaf very early before it gets bad. So far that is working (if its the same thing) Also I have tried spreading an anti-bacterial skin ointment such as Polysporin on the spots. That seems to be holding a couple at bay as well. From all the reading and Googling I did it is a micro virus called poty virus. I have read that it has spread thru Taiwan nurseries and has wiped out some greenhouses of their Phals. Not sure if its true but I believe it when I see how it can spread among my own collection. No other types of orchids have been affected although they may carry the spores or whatever if they have been near a bad Phal. Just my

I wouldn't know. I have been dealing with black rot running through the cattleyas (amazingly, four of them were in no way infected, despite being neghbors). If you are worried about a virus, this is a pretty good look at them:

I have had this problem and it is continuing though it's slowed down after using a systemic fungicide. My plants have been tested for virus and are clear.

What systemic fungicide are you using? I would love to find one in Canada.
