I just recently mounted a phal. I have mounted several other orchids on grape wood, one on a piece of spalted maple, etc. The phal I mounted on a 6" clay saucer. The plant I mounted was growing in sphag so I put a pretty good sized pad of sphag on the saucer, then I put the phal roots on the sphag in the position I wanted it, and then I covered the roots (mostly) with another thin layer of sphag moss. The roots it had been growing were used to being in medium the roots it grows from now on will be more used to being bare. I soak it every 2 or 3 days and it does just fine. I do not mist mine on a daily basis. The clay holds a fair amount of moisture so that it doesn't have to be watered more ofter. I tied mine in place with fishing line, but you can also use panty hose strips.
