Bacteria or Fungus?
I just received this walkeriana seeding today. Can anyone have an idea what disease is? And what should do with this plant? The vendor said it was bacteria or fungus, better cut off the entire new shoot at its base where it is coming out from the older bulb. Agree or other better way?

Its due to an insect bite on the leaf...if it is spreading then you deal with it...if it is not spreading...just leave it be ...the leaf function is a priority to the plant than the aesthetics of the discolorations. Bacteria or fungi can be cleaned with a soft old toothbrush and listerine(the original) no need to cut the leaf...it will yellow and dry and fall off on its own; but the leaf function is a top priority in photosynthesis and a few black spots is really just a sore sight.

My guess would be fungus. You can wait and see if it spreads but you're probably better off cutting off the psuedobulb.

Looks like bacteria to me (seems wet & mushy), if you wish to try and keep the leaf you can try hydrogen peroxide (I have doubts : not enough contact between bacteria and peroxide) but if it keeps growing cut large, some bacteria can consume an entire plant in 24 h so watch out.
I hope it'll get better.

Thanks all of you the suggestions. I washed the leaf with original Listerine. Will wait a day or 2 to see what happen. If it is getting wrose, then cut.....

If you cut the leaf.... Use a sharp knife and get it hot to the point water will boil on it. Don't use scissors or pruners. When you crush tissue, the liquid comes out and if there is bacteria in the air it will start an infection. Same gos for roots.....

Also, Im sure you know but cut the leaf just below the infection.....Not the whole bulb off....

Do pruners get a cleaner cut than knives and scissors?
Hope no need to cut. I am not a good plant surgeon....

No, They crush the cells around where the two cutting edges make contact before cutting.... some times tearing and not cutting.
Knives and razor blades are best!!!!! Small scissors are only good for cutting dead roots. |
