Please help w/ rescue plant! Emergency! Female
Default Please help w/ rescue plant! Emergency!

Hi all,
I really, really need your expertise!! When my mom died suddenly one year ago, I had NO experience with orchids and sadly, my family and I let all of her orchids just fade away and die. Except one. As I came out of my grief I grabbed the remaining ONE plant that was near death and joined this forum in April and the plant started to recover. I trimmed away SO much rotted/dead roots and nearly all the leaves as they were black and brown. There were only two leaves left. I was overjoyed when a new leaf started growing! It seems to grow a bit every day and I watch over it like a mother hen! Yesterday I was horrified to notice some spotting on one of the leaves and some discoloration starting where the leaf starts to come out from the stem. The other leaf also seems to be getting a hint of discoloration too. This leaf has always had a line through it, but I always thought it was just a "split." I have been poring through all my books and am so dismayed at thinking it is a virus and that I will lose my mother's last remaining plant.

Can anyone PLEASE look at these pictures and give me your opinion as to what it may be? If you think it's a virus, then please tell me the truth... I understand that I may be facing a harsh reality here.

Thank you SO much to all.

I don't see anything that would necessarily indicate virus. After a long period of neglect it is normal for leaves to look pretty rough, and that damage never heals, just accelerates the aging of the leaf. All leaves are temporary anyway. It looks like you have a basically healthy new growth, and that is the future for this plant. If you have that and healthy roots all the plant needs is a solid year+ of good care.

Your new lead looks nice and healthy and I agree with the others, there is nothing to worry about.

The lead growth does look fine, as others have mentioned.

The older leaf does not show signs of viral infection. I highly doubt there is any fear from a viral infection on your orchid at all.

Should you still have any doubts whatsoever about our opinions regarding the unlikelihood of your orchid having had contracted a viral infection being valid, there are orchid viral test kits available to hobbyists that you may order online.

Here's the link:

Agdia, Inc. - The World Leader In Plant Pathogen Test Kits.

Whatever form of neglect the plant endured was what had caused the leaf discoloration on the older leaf, as was mentioned. Once that damage is done, it's done, it will not go away.

Do you happen to have a photo of the entire plant or a name tag in the pot?

Right now I'm guessing it's some sort of Cattleya or any number of their intergeneric hybrids

Placing a name to the plant may get you better care instructions.
