Help!! Almost killed my Masdevallia titan

So I didn't realize that I over watered my Masdevallia titan (see this post Masdevallia (Regalia) titan). It was set to give me a second bloom from an earlier spike, when I saw it this morning the bloom was blasting. I decided to look at the roots and yup, brown stuff. I unpotted, cut off all the dead roots. Some were mush, most were just hollow and black. Two roots were left, but they were brown, though not mushy at all.

So I repoted in a much looser medium. A little tree fern roots for drainage, and a very open airy medium of tree bark surrounding the plant itself. Put the plant in a humid yet dry spot. Hopefully it will recover.

Do you guys think it will be ok? What would you have done??? Thanks.

I'd have done basically the same, apart from I'd have soaked in a rooting hormone type: KLN or other .... before re potting as well as the medium. You can always add rooting hormone to your feeds from now on. I don't believe it makes much difference...

Hopefully someone else with more knowledge willl also chip in ! I say this also because I was given my second ever Massie Hybrid 3 weeks ago...and I killed the first one after a year and I have never dared to buy one .. and now I posess a second one ....

I agree, I always soak my potting medium and roots in superthrive when repotting for whatever reason. Good luck, its a beauty.

you have ruled out everything else and are satisfied it was overwatered? I think I would have added some all in one fungicide/biocide/virucide in the mix too just in case the rot had gone bacterial or fungal.I know you re-potted the plant, but the whatever else was in the pot is still on and maybe a part of the 2 roots left. Your other plants are all pretty clean and you have one that has a problem. ????. Isolation..Got to set it to the side and watch it closely. Orchid ICU. The plant will be okey.

Yea, looks like it, it was set in a spot where it received lots of splash from the ultrasonic fogger.

Those pesky splashes from the ultrasonic fogger will get yeah every time! That's why I've opted to the Zoo Med fog machine now. It's self-enclosed and you don't have to worry about the splash effect.

Best of luck with your Masdie! Keep us informed, and I'd really like to know myself as I just purchased two kinds and one is fine and the other is suffering (only 3 leaves left, but has two new growths).

Not only would I have put it in the smallest pot that I could find, but I'd put it in an airier medium, and not a whole lot of it as well. That's what I did with some of mine that were damaged badly from over watering. The rest of the space was filled in with styrofoam peanuts.

I'd also let the plant dry out completely before watering again (goes against what is normally suggested, but the plant is getting plenty of moisture already, it's only got 2 roots).

Then you cross your fingers and hope it pulls through.

Don't sweat it dude, when I was starting out growing Masevallias, I too had a habit of over watering them. I figured it out after giving it some thought as to why some of my Masdevallias were not pulling through.

Thanks king, I did the airy medium. Its barely covered with large pieces of tree bark. The only thing I didnt do was put it in a smaller pot. Im at crossing fingers stage now.
