Leaf Problems

Hi everyone,
I have leaf problems on two separate plants.
My questions are.....

Plant A: Could someone please tell me what the yellowing leaves on my each of my two Encyclias are? I noticed the yellowing this morn. as I was watering. I repotted one plant 2-20-11 and the other 3-21-11. It crossed my mind this morn. that I could have been so focused on potting that I overlooked the yellowing, but I very seriously doubt that was the case. I can't imagine me missing something so obvious. The yellow areas show through to the underside of each leaf and where the green meets the yellow on some leaves, there is a crease very slightly mushy. There are new growths on each plant, but it's too early for me to tell if the yellowing is on them, as well. As far as I can tell, they look very healthy, though.

Plant B: Could you also tell me what the brown area on only one of several leaves on my Bc. Little Marmaid 'Janet' is? The dark area shows through to the underside, but as you can see, the damage is more obvious underneath. I also repotted it on 2-20-11. I know that I could not have possibly missed seeing the problem then. It's way too obvious.

I would appreciate knowing your opinions and advice. I welcome any input.

I'm sorry, I don't know either, but maybe you should isolate them from any other plants until you figure it out. It looks like some kind of bacteria or virus to me. Did they get chilled or exposed to something?

Hi,
I just took it on myself and cut the bad leaf areas off then sprayed the plants with Phyton 27 yesterday afternoon. I figured it couldn't hurt in case they had developed a fungal infection or a secondary bacterial infection from sunburn. I really wasn't aware if they had gotten burned anytime but that's not to say that it hasn't happened. They've been in my greenhouse and I've had my shadecloth up for a few weeks but on the few sunny days we've had recently, the sun was very bright. Maybe they weren't acclimated to that much sun yet (just a theory). ??

Answering your question about cold, I know that definitely hasn't been the case. I have kept the night temps. regulated with heaters.

In any case, I'll do as you advise and isolate them from my other plants then move them to a less bright area later. I just don't know how long I should isolate them, though. ??

Back to Phyton 27.....I've never used it before now so I don't know if I should spray the plants again with it. ?? If I should, neither do I know how many more times, of course.....or if the one time is all that's necessary. ?? Do you have experience with it? If so, I would appreciate it if you will let me know.

Unfortunately it seems we can't get Phyton 27 and Physan in Canada so I have no experience with it. I think I have seen posts on here that indicate you should use it with caution. But hopefully someone else will step in, or you could do another post with Phyton 27 in the title and maybe people with knowledge will reply.

I don't think those leaves were contributing much good, so I think its good you got rid of them.

phyton 27 is a copper based bacterial agent mostly...it will kill algae also.....physan is a milder form of the same action but formulated differently...i use the phyton 27 about 3-4 times a year in my gh to keep bacteria at bay and keep the benches clean...i use the physan all the time, washing my tools in it and using it on the whole plant periodically with no bad effects....one thing to remember with chemicals is to use them early in the morning before the sun and heat get hi in the gh, it can cause some burning....gl

Vicki, if those areas were dry and rigid, I'd attribute it to sunburn. If soft, a likely bacterial infection - erwinia, maybe.

Your removal and Phyton treatment was probably a good choice. I'd wait and see, now.

I've never used Phyton before now so is it a "one time treatment", or am I to spray my plants with it again? If so, how many more times and how far between each? Sorry for more questions, I hope you don't mind.
