Default What is this??

Hi All,

I am helping out a friend that has an orchid (it looks like Phal), but it has what looks to be sticky substance on the leaves as well as little red bumps and the roots looks like they are in rough shape, but not mushy?? Not sure what the red bumps and sticky goop looking stuff is -- fungus? The orchid is in need of repotting, but I am not sure if it is worth it -- is it too far gone? ..

Thanks,
Jared

Could be scales (aphids with armour) can you scrape / rub them of?

Roots should be ok after repotting.

Looks like scale to me too. Check any other plants in the area. Roots just need the dead ones cut off and a repot. Very salvageable. Needs some tlc is all. And of course treatment for scale and other nasties.

Don't give up just yet! I think it might make it. there seem to be some good healthy roots left! Plus it will give you some good practice. Good luck!

Cool -- thanks for the suggestions. This is not my plant, but I would like to see if I can save it.

JDawggie, it definitely looks like scale as others have suggested. Make sure to keep it away from all other plants as it is very contagious and hard to get rid of completely.
