I've been rotating several different insecticides (one of which is no longer sold). One that really does work well is the active ingredient Imidacloprid, which is a systemic insecticide by Bayer. In the Netherlands it's sold under the name of Admire. In France it's called Confidor. Don't know about the UK.

I use it as a spray (can also be a pot drench), but has to slightly adjust the dosage, using 2,5ml per L water instead of 2ml. I also add a bit of dishsoap to enhance the contact killing effect until it kicks in systemically.
