I have an Iwanagara AppleBlossom orchid which flowered once in the late summer, put out a new stem and then started, what I thought was, a new flower bud. But after hanging on to that small bud for weeks, it suddenly turned brown and died. Any suggestions about avoiding this in the future? I've attached a photo. The plant looks otherwise pretty healthy, although not brilliant. We live in upstate New York, where our house if pretty dry due to heat. Thanks!

If it bloomed in the late summer was probably done for awhile it thought about blooming again and decided not to . They will do that sometimes .Not much you can do about it ..

I have a catt with a large bloom sheath that has been developing for months and the buds have now emerged and are looking healthy. But a few weeks ago, another pseudobulb very quickly produced buds without a sheath. They looked fine for a week and then turned brown and died. It sounds similar to yours. My plant looks healthy and the 3 buds from the sheath are huge and lovely so I think they just get carried away and then have second thoughts sometimes.

Thanks for your quick answer, Gin! Does this mean that's it for this stem? No new stem growth insight yet. Oh well.

Thanks again to all who are answering. Should I cut back on fertilizer to discourage this over-enthusiastic growth?
