Totally made my day!

I think it's a really pretty moth and agree that you could very gently move it if you are concerned.

have you nudged it? some moths are nocturnal, and don't really move during the day much ...

Moths are really good about staying still, especially during the day.

It might not be dead.

I found out that this species has some subspecies.

So there's:

1. Hyles lineata lineata (which is yours)

2. Hyles lineata livornica (in Africa and parts of Europe).

Hyles lineata livornica pollinates several flowering plants including the orchid Bonatea speciosa.

So who knows what this pollinates.

Maybe it likes something you have...

I don't think it's dead. Moths don't move most of the day, sometimes even when nudged. Defense mechanism and all.

Pretty.

Went out to check on his location and guess what he's gone. He stayed in that position all day and only moved when it got dark. Talk about playing dead. I checked everything and couldn't find him in the shadehouse, so guess whatever he was doing is done. Thanks for all your help. If I find any babies shortly I'll be careful and move them.
