Help my Ascocenda!
Default Help my Ascocenda!

I bough this Ascocenda Korb Fah in late March at an orchid show. I did not pay much attention to any part of the orchid, except the color of the flower (that’s why I bought it). Unfortunately, I had to cut off the flower stem after a few days, because I found mealy bugs! Then it started growing one new leaf, and later on one new root, which is longer than 1 inch now. And that’s the end of the good news.

The leaves were a bit wrinkled when I bought it and it had some dark spots on the surface of the leaves and tips (I cover the spots with nail polish now. The spots did not seem to spread). It had a lot of dried roots (Eventually, I decided to cut them off yesterday). The new leaf seems to stop growing for sometime. And the old leaves look drier and drier, even with some split.

In the beginning, I watered it every two days (in a bucket of water for 20-30 mins with fertilizer 20 20 20). Now I water it every day (in the water bucket for 30 mins, plus 1-2 water spray in the afternoon). The humidity in the room is always above 40% (usually 55-60%). The light level should be sufficient, for my Cattleya grows very well.

I am wondering if I am doing the right thing with it? What else I can do to make it grow better? And what’s wrong with the orchid (the dark spots, the wrinkled leaves).

The pics looks much nicer than it really is!

Gosh, it sure looks good. I think the main problem is too much fertilizing (every other day.) Once a week is plenty, and weakly..then.

But it should be watered every day, twice sometimes is ok., when they are bare root I don't think you can over water, by watering in the morning and misting in the afternoon. Wrinkling leaves usually means the plant needs water. Be careful moving the plant around that you don't damage the root eyes. Stop trimming. Old roots many times pop new eyes.

I have mine in sun till about noon, are they getting any sun where you have them.? Mine go in spurts of growth. But they love strong light.

I never heard of nail polish on the leaves so I'll leave that for someone else, but I don't think that is a good idea either. A little less TLC probably won't hurt. It doesn't sound like it has adjusted well.

Ascocendas need high light and lots of water. I completely agree with CTB on stopping the root trimming. Vandas should never have their roots messed with, especially cut. They often sulk afterwards. The black spots on the leaves you were referring to are probably just from sun expesure, and nothing to worry about. Perfectly natural. I also agree on not so much fertilizer and more water. And, a good thing to remember is that it's not how often you water, but for how long. You have to give the velamin time to fully absorb the water. My favorite local orchid nursery waters their Vanda house once a day in the summer for 15-20 minutes straight. The leaf wrinkling is brobably due to the loss off roots and therefore a more restricted water intake. Possibly her sulking reaction.
Concerning the cutting of the flower spike due to mealy bugs, personally, I don't think that was necessary. If you happen to encounter them again, try insecticidal soap, or, like me-you can use a pair of tweezers to pick them off one-by-one if the infestation is'nt to severe. Usually there only tends to be a couple to a few mealies in my experince.
Hope this was of any help!
