Vanda roots yellowing-help? Female
Default Vanda roots yellowing-help? (added photos)

I just got a large ascocenda a week ago. It has two very long, thick roots. Each large root has several "side roots" growing out of it, which are all about 3" long. The problem is that the side roots are dying. The side roots begin to turn brown at the area where they attach to the larger root, and the remaining portions start to turn yellow and wrinkled.

There's also a "crack" on a larger root, and the area below the crack is turning brown and yellow too. There's still about 7" of healthy, green root below the crack.

What's wrong? Anything I can do?

I'm hanging it by the windowsill and I'm soaking it 2 times a day for 10 minutes. Humidity is around 50-60% and temperature is 83 deg F.

Thanks for any help!

Is it possible that the roots were damaged over transport?

Is that a big plant. Show the rest of it please? Does it also have new roots? It looks like old roots to me. Maybe they suffered some damage but I wouldn't worry about it unless all the root system looks like that. How are you soaking them?

Sometimes roots will be yellow or brown at the base of the 'branch' because at some time during its development, the root got too dry. As long as the tips of the roots are green, you can be pretty sure that the root is alive. If side roots are dead, you can cut them at the base (with a sterile blade), seal the cut, and response to wound is that new root may develop. The more roots under your plant, the better!
