Default Worrisome spots on Oncidium

I have a new Oncidium Sharry Baby and I noticed some spots on the leaves. It was shipped carefully packed and appears to be in excellent condition otherwise.

Connie,
It looks like a fungal leaf spot: Cercospora, Guignardia, Phyllosticta or Septoria
However, it could also be Cymbidium Mosaic Virus. If you have any Agdia ELISA virus testing kits at home I'd test it. If negative, I'd treat for fungus with some Cleary 3336.
...and I'd also cut that leaf off as well

If this isn't new foliage I would suspect the leaf is dying back. the spots could be fungal - Oncidiums are prone to spotting - is this the only leaf affected?

Connie can you show us a photo of the whole plant please? I'm sure it would help figure out if it's age/sun spotting or fungal

Where can you get the kit, and the Cleary stuff? I have sent samples to Critter Creek Lab- might do that.

Connie,
It is much less of a hassle to get ELISA viral testing kits and do it yourself than to send a specimen to Critter Creek.
You just have to take care to do the test properly and it is fairly simple. Goto Agdia.com...you have to buy 25 kits at a time for about $120 but they are good for one year. If you buy orchids frequently or if you have a "friend" who also buys and between you have 25+ per year to test, viola! Purchase the combined strip which tests for CymMV and ORSV.
https://orders.agdia.com/InventoryD....ribute_Size=25
It will take less than one week for your ELISA kits to arrive by mail.
This is well worth the money imo considering what is spent by me and it sounds like possibly you in the course of a year on orchids. One virused plant can harm your entire collection and once you start testing you will see. I have had three plants out of the last 10 I ordered come up positive!
Understand though, that a plant could still have virus and test negative if the viral load is small...so "sterile" repotting techniques still need to be used.
I have tested about 110 plants in the last 6 months and most of the positive specimens are phals and oncidium types.
This does not look like normal aging to me as even the leaf below this one has some irregular areas of pallor to it that is not normal.
I would isolate this plant until you have squared away what you have.
If it is CymMV positive, just enjoy her until she fades away but in isolation. If it is ORSV positive, pitch the plant. Personally, I take a photo of my test and contact the vendor. Most honorable vendors will at least give you a credit towards another purchase.
If both are negative than YIPEE! Treat for fungus. I get my fungicides from rosemania.com...they have stuff that will kill everything possible 'cus I've said before rose growers are quite crazy!

Thanks eyebabe. I have some laboratory training (I'm a medical doctor) so an ELISA should be easy.

Well I tried to order the testing kits from Agdia, but their server wouldn't let me create an account, which I apparently need to order. I'll have to wait until I can call them. It looks like they have a very complete line of plant pathogen testing available.
The test kit they sell for CymMV and ORSV does not appear to be an ELISA, but I don't think that matters.

The test Agdia sells is more like a pregnancy test. It comes with a buffer in which you have to shred the part of the plant you want to test. After that you enter the immuno strip in the buffer. And then wait.

I must ad I worked professionaly with these strips before and they are not 100% reliable depending on concentration of virus particles. I've seen false positives and false negatives.

There is a topic on this forum front on testing on indicator plants.
