the worst one is on one side and the other side looks fine

Drosha --- Has your friend checked for false spider mites by running a wet tissue over and under the leaves ? it looks a little like mite damage then fungal if the tissue comes back with orange streaks then that is what it is they are very had to see with out a mag. glass ..

I had also been thinking of something insect related, but why would it suddenly and mysteriously disappear after winter is over? Seems more like something in the growing conditions that triggered it.
