Its also possible that instead of being crown rot it was the rot of only the newest leaf. Which makes sense if there is another on it way. I think crown rot has the potential to kill the entire plant very quickly, though I am not certain.

Good thought Tin. Jeffery, I think I would leave things as they are for awhile. The leaf with the black on it, if it isn't mushy, let it be.
Someone chime in if I'm leading Jeffery astray.
