Default Possible Phal rot

So I have this phal that I bought at the local grocery store and it was very healthy. It had two sprays of pretty small purple flowers. The flowers dropped, which was normal, and so I cut one of the stems back to the first node before the first flower to see if I could get a keiki to grow (or at least some more flowers), but the end of the stem where I cut it has turned black.
And the other stem, which had more unopened buds and thus took longer for the flowers to drop, the little sheaths where the flowers come out have all turned black and the sheaths along the nodes are turning black as well.
So to make a long inquiry short, What is going on here? Should I just cut the whole stem off or what? I'm afraid it might be rot, but I don't have a clue what from...
I'll attach a picture to give you an idea of what it looks like.

Welcome to OB!

It is normal for the bracts to dry out after a while. To be safe have you checked its roots? Grocery store orchids are notorious for have bad roots. Mainly do to people not knowing how to prperly care for them.

Hello and welcome to the OB.
I agree with Ted: check your roots.

Welcome to Orchid Board.

I agree as well. Check the roots and provided they and the plant is healthy I wouldn't worry.

I'm so sad...

I checked the roots and to much dismay... there weren't many.

The bark it was in had gotten waterlogged, (partially my fault for not watering them properly...) and the roots were rotting. So I did all of the necessary procedures associated with root rot and repotted the poor thing into a medium that drys a little faster (I love watering my plants) and so hopefully it'll pull through. The plant itself is increadibly healthy, it has like 8 or 9 leaves all firm and green, but it just doesn't have much to support it underneath.

To be continued when something else occurs...
