horticultural oil and vandas

Has anyone used horticultural oil as an insecticide on vandas with any success? I haven't used this yet, but before I started spraying a test plant, I thought I would first ask if anyone else has used this treatment before. What I'm spraying for are thrips. After having a couple of species vandas lose their spikes last year to thrips over the summer, I've decided to take a more proactive approach this year and start spraying before any spikes appear.
