Based on the description you make, it sounds a lot like thrips. I'm not quite sure what you mean by the size description. If it's thrips, they are only a few millimeters long. What parts of the plant are you seeing them on? Thrips love to feed on pollen so they usually congregate in blooms. The rest of the time they feed on the leaves. Larvae are smaller and are yellow/white. Symptoms of feeding damage is silvery markings on the blooms and leaves. If it's thrips, the only sure way of dealing with them is using a systemic insecticide. Thrips love to hide, and contact insecticides just wouldn't get to them.
