I work in the paint dept. at a renovation shop. The test we advise people to do if they don't know if they have oil or latex paint at home is to put alcohol on a cloth and to rub the wall. If the clothy get stained, it's water based. If you know alcohol is safe for orchids, you can go on and rub it on the paint.
