Is it rot?? *scratches head*

I bought two Blc. cuttings from the same vendor at a show last year, and i noticed the same hardened black patch on the two cuttings after a while. I have never seen this on any of my other plants.

The blackened part is hard, not mushy or smelly or anything! Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
