Cracking pseudobulbs in Encyclia

My mum's Encyclia (clamshell orchid) has several pseudobulbs and three of them have started to show cracks. One has collected several cracks and seems to be drying out, turning brown and woody. Any ideas on the problem? I shall try to get some photos.

My Enciclias have the same problem and it doesnt seem to hurt the plant at all. Im not sure of the cause...

I've seen the same thing in mine. I believe I was allowing them to get too dry in between waterings, then watering to much at one time, instead of going slower to let them fill properly - thats when I seen the cracks starting.

Its better for them to look closed up and woody then brown & soft.
