So this is my first winter with my Galeopetalum 'Rhein Moonlight', and I live in the great Northeastern tundra of upstate NY...well its not truely tundra but it sure feels like it this time of year.
I started going to school in Syracuse, NY and have had an interesting time getting used to living in an old,extremely drafty house that is my apartment. I believe my orchids nearly froze sitting near a windowsill in my room and may have been overwatered and underwatered at times. My Galeopetalum recently began wrinkling up at the pseudobulb, and watering was not helping. When I cameback to my parents house for break, I repotted it and found most of the roots spongey, hollow, and brown/grey. Ugh!
I clipped away most of the dead but when they were becoming too sparse for comfort, I left a few on. Thankfully, there are some new baby roots forming around the pseudobulbs that are lustrous,white and firm with green tips, though they are still quite tiny.
I've been reading up on emergency root revival techniques and sort of combined some of my own tricks. Right now the plant roots are soaking in luke warm water with a tiny pinch of sugar and some diced potato pieces(for potassium) and a tiny bit of rooting hormone for extra measure.I plan to allow 2 hours of soaking, followed by the old sphag in a bag trick I've been reading about. Hopefully this works! Any input is much appreciated, and I will be sure to update you all. Wish me luck!
