Phals air roots stopped growing
Default Phals air roots stopped growing

Hello all its been awhile. Last time I wrote in my Phall s leaves were drooping and listless. It had one spire, which I have now cut off leaving a shot 2" piece sticking up. I got rid of all the moss which was holding the moisture in and ended up rotting the airroots. Now how do I go about getting new air roots to start growing? I have 2 wee short airroots but they show no new growth in over 2 months..
It sits ina west window about 3 ' back from the direct sun.
It has 3 leaves which are nice and green but limp , very limp. I read here about a root stimulant ( KSB or something like that)
Whats the next step? Im In Vancouver area of BC Canada
Thank you all for your help and guidance to this newbie.)
Brent

Hi Brent,
I agree, pictures would be of help!
Sometimes aerial roots seem to stop growing for no reason, and then one day they decide to grow again! I've noticed that increasing light and spraying the roots once or twice a day seems to get them going again. I don't know if it is a coincidence or not, but I'm going to keep up with that!

It's probably a sign of low humidity. You may be able to solve this simply by misting once or twice a day.

I agree with jkofferdahl. Just about all aerial roots respond to high humidity. They can start up again, but unlikely unless you mist several times a day (not the plant, but the roots) or increase the humidity. This is common with plants (the kind sending out aerial roots, of course) that experience high humidity during a growth spurt followed by a dry spell (usually less than, say 60-70%). Hope this helps. It's nothing to get worried about.

Thanks to everyone for the quick responses. Im going to place the whole pot ,except the upper plant portion, into a plastic bag with a small opening / hopefully this will increase the humidity and force the roots to start growing again. Ill also try and attach some pictures so all can see. This plant has held on for quite some time like this but I don't want it to die
Ill get those pictures.
Bellini, I have it in some hunks of bark material.
Thanks again to all)

when switching from sphag to bark, it's often best to switch to a 50-50 mix of the two for the first repotting. this mix retains more moisture than bark alone, and will not give the plant such a shock.
