sanitation/hygine

i was reading something a few weeks ago that said inorder to keep your plants from getting sick you need to keep them clean/have good hygine or something like that. what do you guys do to keep your plants and growing area clean? do you just spray down all the surfaces every now and then, or there more to it? i got some bugs the other week so i want make sure they don't come back, but i don't know exactly what i need to do to ensure that.
